Let us NOT forget them. Let not their untimely deaths be in vain. It’s way past time for White America to come to terms with the unabated racism which permeates the very soul of this country.
Thank you to the right-thinking white folks, on Facebook, who took a stand against one of their own on my behalf. After going back and forth with with a white male who allowed his white male privilege do the talking, but getting nowhere fast, I had to step back and just rest. Its refreshing that right thinking white folks are willing to come to the table and have heartfelt platitude-free discussions. It takes courage to call out one of your own when they’ve allowed their white (often male) privilage get the best of them. Thank you all for putting that arrogant white male in check. Its more effective when a white person calls out one of their own on their racist bigoted behavior and/or attitudes.
It really grieves me to know that in 2015, we black folks, especially women and girls, aren’t safe ANYWHERE from the angry white male’s hate-filled murderous vitriol. Those beautiful souls weren’t murdered in a juke joint, crackhouse, or on a corner, but slaughtered in their house of WORSHIP WHILE they WERE PRAYING by a rage filled dysfunctional young white male who purposely selected THAT particular church to wreck his carnage. The church especially for us Black women, is a place of succor, safety, and community where, away from the oppressive eyes of the white male, we can gather and nurture each other, organize community events, and share community news. What’s really sad is one of those killed Susie Jackson was an 87 year old woman who lived through; Jim Crow, segregation, lynchings, riots, Klu Klux Klan, unabated police brutality, K-9 dog attacks, high pressure fire hoses, … just be butchered in her house of worship in 2015!
That particular church, Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal, was a MAJOR gathering place for Black civil rights warriors during the civil rights movement. Hence Roof knew EXACTLY what effect his murderous actions would have upon Black folks. He wanted to rip out our hearts and in his words “start a race war” but Providence had other plans. His pernicious actions were the catalyst which is bringing about SERIOUS heartfelt discussion with “race” as the topic, such as what we are having across social media, coffee houses, at water coolers, living rooms, at dinner table, and all over the world.
Hence i am ready to come to the table and have heart-to-heart race-related discussions, with other like minded folks to begin the dialogue. Thank you to all right-thinking white folks for extending the hand of healing and peace. Its long overdue but never too late.
